Before scheduling a date to take your ACT, take a practice test first to find out what your current ACT score is. Then figure out your target score, the score you need to get in to the college of your choice. Once you have done this, then you will have an idea of how much time you will need to prepare for the test. Think about your after school commitments and how much time this leaves you, each week, for test prep. Here is a rough estimate of the total time you need to dedicate to up your score.
0-30 point improvement: 10 hours
30-70 point improvement: 20 hours
70-130 point improvement: 40 hours
130-200 point improvement: 80 hours
200-330 point improvement: 150 hours +

This is an ideal time for juniors to take their first ACT test. It’s the start of the school year, which equals less workload, and you have the summer vacation to focus solely on the test. Most of the content you will have already covered in your high school classes. Also, it gives you plenty of time to retake it in the spring of your junior year. This is one of the last opportunities for seniors to take the test before submitting their college applications.

October is another good time for juniors to take the test for the first time. Again, it gives you plenty of time to prepare to retake it in the spring. For seniors, it is the second to last chance to to take the test before the January 1st. college application deadline.

If you are a junior and you haven’t taken the ACT yet, this date is a good opportunity to take it. so you have enough time to prepare for your retake in the spring. Seniors can take the test on this date, but it is cutting close to the college application deadline on January 1st.
